Northern
Bobwhite Quail
(Colinus Virginianus)
A PHOTO of the Northern Bobwhite Quail is coming soon.
These
birds are the favorites among hunters and breeders. Native to the Northern states
they are very cold hardy and in the wild form large coveys, up to 30 in a covey,
which when disturbed flush beautifully. They are also one of the easiest of the
Quail species to raise in captivity. The average size of these birds, are 5 to
6 ounces and are quite tasty.
Bobwhite Quail
are quite easy to identify compared to most other Quail species. The adult male
is known for his bright white chest and white stripe between two black stripes
along the top of his eye. The female has a brownish tan stripe above the eye.
Both their bodies are brown speckled. Bobwhite Quail are mature at 6 weeks of
age.
The Bobwhite's call is very distintive and
beautiful. We walk along the flight pens just to hear the whistle, bob-bob-White
for the unmated male birds and "bob-wight"! from the male birds with mates. You
hear these most often in the spring and Summer.
